Venice Fire Hydrants

"What appealed to me was the idea of scenes of Venice not determined by their beauty or appeal but by the presence of a fire hydrant."

In 2016 I spent a month in Venice passing most of my days in the city exploring it on foot. Every time I came across a fire hydrant for the first time I would photograph it, constrained by three rules:

  1. Stand at a distance of approximately 10 metres from the hydrant or the lesser distance permitted by the built environment

  2. Stand at an angle orthogonal to hydrant, where practical

  3. Centre the hydrant vertically in the field of view.

Every time that I visit Venice I add to the collection any hydrant encountered that I haven't already photographed. The collection currently stands at 369. What appealed to me was the idea of scenes of Venice not determined by their beauty or appeal but by the presence of a fire hydrant.
